Our conversation with Professor Andrew Valls and Esther "Little Dove" John was about housing discrimination and why it should form one of the central pillars in the argument for reparations to African Americans. That was the conclusion of a recent thought provoking article Prof. Valls wrote with his colleague Prof. Jonathan Kaplan both at Oregon State University.

Andrew Valls is an assistant professor of political science and a nominee to Secretary Housing and Urban Development on the Progressive Cabinet. He's working on a book, Color-Conscious Liberalism: An Argument for Racial Justice, in which he will tackle one of the central paradoxes of democratic theory as it can be applied to the current American political system. How can a political theory grounded in egalitarianism accommodate public policies that treat citizens differently based on their race?

Esther "Little Dove" John, an educator, activist and radio personality is one of the founding mothers of the Community Coalition for Environmental Justice and known for her peace walks, including a solo walk from Seattle to the United Nations in New York City. Ms. John is also deeply involved with the Homestead Community Land Trust in Seattle. A Community Land Trust (CLT) creates affordable housing by taking the cost of land out of the purchase price of a home. It keeps housing affordable for future buyers by controlling the resale price of houses on CLT land through a ground lease and resale formula.
