Jakada Imani, nominee for Deputy Attorney General for Justice Programs is the new Executive Director of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, and Campaign Director for Books Not Bars. He has deep roots and a wide network in the Bay Area social justice movement. Born and raised in Oakland, California, J is a longtime organizer, popular educator and artist. The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights is a strategy and action center working for justice, opportunity and peace in urban America. Based in Oakland, California, they promote positive alternatives to violence and incarceration through our four cutting-edge campaigns. One of those campaigns, Books Not Bars fights to redirect California's resources away from youth incarceration and towards youth opportunities. With recent victories in California, their's is a model for the nation. Jakada Imani is a courageous and innovative progressive leader transforming our current wasteful, racist, counter-productive and punitive so-called "corrections" system and replace it with a restorative, truly just system to invest in all America's children - not their captivity.
